Even during winter, the landscape can be surpringly beautiful in the starkness of the cold and snow. It makes for some different four season photography.

Southeast Alaska 2012 : I live and work in Southeast Alaska every summer possible. I work different jobs but I try to never miss the opportunity to be there. 2012 was a shortened summer season but still, I would rather be there than not.

Southeast Alaska 2011 : From April until September, 2011, I was living and working in Southeast Alaska. Home base was in Juneau and I was a Forest Service naturalist aboard the M/V Malaspina, an Alaska State ferry, running between Juneau and Haines and Skagway daily (the day boat). There are many sights along the way including marine mammals, mountains, lighthouses and small towns. I am working on marine mammal photography this summer as I try to follow a pod of six orcas - a male, two females, two juveniles and a calf. We also see humpback whales, the zippy Dall's porpoises and Steller sea lions. Harbor seals and harbor porpoises are here but elusive. The summer proved to be an amazing experience and I am sharing my travels through photography.

The Great Land : Alaska in one of my favorite vacation places. It is moody and beautiful and ever-changing. It is a place worthy of more than a cruise ship visit from Vancouver or Seattle where you may only have hours in a port. It requires days of walking and hiking, getting to know the landscape and the people. It is more than one visit. Take your time and strike out on your own.

Al-Can : In late May 2007, I drove the Alaska Highway. We didn't lose a windshield or get a flat tire. The route is paved and a challenge at times, especially the frost heaves, which are marked by flags. We devised a slalom technique to "ski" around them when there was no traffic coming from the opposite direction. It beat hitting the brakes to slow down every few minutes. We left Cleveland and drove all around the central interior of Alaska and ended up in Skagway, then took the ferry to Juneau. My friends and daughter went home and I stayed behind in Sitka to work as an archaeologist for several weeks. Driving the Alaska Highway is so fun! It is just gorgeous and these photographs do not begin to represent the incredible diversity along the route. It is well worth the adventure. I recommend flying into Calgary or Anchorage and renting a car from there for your trip.

Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial : Summer 2008 - I'm working on South Bass Island. It is in the western basin of Lake Erie. The monument is a singular column rising from the island. It can be seen from the Ohio mainland and almost anywhere from Pelee Island (in Canadian waters) to Catawba and Marblehead. It is the only peace memorial in the National Park System and signifies lasting peace between the United States, Canada and Great Britain since the conclusion of the War of 1812. It was constructed from 1912 - 1915. An elevator that takes less than a minute takes you gently up 317 feet above Lake Erie. On clear days, the view is awesome.

Alberta : I really like Alberta. The province is geographically diverse - from the badlands and rolling countryside of the southerneastern and east-central part to the sharp incline of the Canadian rockies in the western and northern part to the incredibly desolate landscape of the route to the Alaska Highway, it's just amazing. Most of my trips have concentrated in Banff and Jasper National Parks and I hope to go back some day soon.

Vancouver 2010 : Every year, Vancouver is different. I may go to the same places but still, there is the passage of time that changes a place. The diversity of British Columbia always amazes me. This year's trip was unusual - I was on my own. It produced a chaotic quality to my work but each photographer works differently. I will add and subtract from this gallery over the next few days so if you see something today and it's gone tomorrow, please just ask. Many thanks to Patrick Parenteau for the wonderful companionship in Steveston. For the balance of 2010, a portion of sales from this gallery will go into a fund to assist Vancouver's Mosaic Church on W. 4th Avenue. Thanks...blessings.
