From April until September, 2011, I was living and working in Southeast Alaska. Home base was in Juneau and I was a Forest Service naturalist aboard the M/V Malaspina, an Alaska State ferry, running between Juneau and Haines and Skagway daily (the day boat). There are many sights along the way including marine mammals, mountains, lighthouses and small towns. I am working on marine mammal photography this summer as I try to follow a pod of six orcas - a male, two females, two juveniles and a calf. We also see humpback whales, the zippy Dall's porpoises and Steller sea lions. Harbor seals and harbor porpoises are here but elusive. The summer proved to be an amazing experience and I am sharing my travels through photography.

Of course, I had to take the hand-over-fist, use-the-climbing rope unmaintained hazardous trail.
As we ascended, Mendenhall Glacier could be seen through the trees. This was late April before the cottonwood and alder and other trees had leafed out.
