  1. Alaska

The Great Land

Alaska in one of my favorite vacation places. It is moody and beautiful and ever-changing. It is a place worthy of more than a cruise ship visit from Vancouver or Seattle where you may only have hours in a port. It requires days of walking and hiking, getting to know the landscape and the people. It is more than one visit. Take your time and strike out on your own.

  • Nugget Falls - if it's not terribly flooded by snow melt, you can take one of several paths toward the falls. They are huge, much larger than this photography can represent. I'm still a fair distance away.

  • Mendenhall Glacier - July, 2006. One of the folks stated that it had rained for two weeks striaght before we showed up. We had bright, sunny skies for our entire visit in Juneau. The following year, we got out to Mendenhall for a couple of hours in the morning before a steady rain set in for the rest of the day. It happens - bring a raincoat!

  • Because the low sandbars were already flooded, we had to climb over this rock fall to get out to Nugget Falls. It was interesting and well worth the climb.

  • Mt. Edgecumbe, an exstinct cone volcano, is located on Kruzof Island, only 14 miles from Sitka. It provides a dramatic backdrop to the town. In the foreground are the support for the bridge to Japonski Island and the house of the publisher of the local paper. This photograph was taken in late May, 2007. The snow had melted up to the cone by the end of June.
