The Great Land

Alaska in one of my favorite vacation places. It is moody and beautiful and ever-changing. It is a place worthy of more than a cruise ship visit from Vancouver or Seattle where you may only have hours in a port. It requires days of walking and hiking, getting to know the landscape and the people. It is more than one visit. Take your time and strike out on your own.

    Floatplanes and boats in the Sitka Channel (2009).
    I lived and worked in Sitka during the summer of 2007. It is experience that I will never forget. I would do it again. Here was my "office view" every day. Mt. Edgecumbe is an extinct volcano and good thing - it's only 14 miles from Sitka. It's on Kruzof Island and accessible by boat. There are a lot of bears on the island but some awesome hiking trails, too!
