Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial
Summer 2008 - I'm working on South Bass Island. It is in the western basin of Lake Erie. The monument is a singular column rising from the island. It can be seen from the Ohio mainland and almost anywhere from Pelee Island (in Canadian waters) to Catawba and Marblehead. It is the only peace memorial in the National Park System and signifies lasting peace between the United States, Canada and Great Britain since the conclusion of the War of 1812. It was constructed from 1912 - 1915. An elevator that takes less than a minute takes you gently up 317 feet above Lake Erie. On clear days, the view is awesome.
